Membership Dues

It’s that time of year again!  Please submit your dues for 2008 as soon as possible.  You may send them to Jasper Deutscher Verein, Attn:  Rita Egler, P. O. Box 15, Jasper, IN  47547-0015.  Rita is also available at our meetings if you wish to contact her then. 

Single membership is $5.00 per year and a couple membership is $10 per year.  What a deal!!!  What an opportunity to experience our German heritage on a monthly basis.

STRASSENFEST 2008

We will be taking signups at the May meeting and later, please call the Al and Judy Bennett at 482-4275, or Dan and Linda Wehr at 482-4432 to schedule your shift – and we really appreciate you scheduling more than one shift, which several members did last year.

This year we must spread our workload out a bit more to get the job done.  We will be asking some of you to possibly take a different shift to match staffing with sales a bit better. Example; we really have way too much help on Thursday evening (our least sales day) and not enough on Friday and Saturday.  We very much appreciate your cooperation and help!

German American Day Dinner – Monday, October 6, at the Schnitzelbank

JHS German Exchange Program

Students of the Jasper High School German Club participating in the German Student Exchange Program and their parents will be selling hamburgers and bratwurst on May 23rd and 24th at the Buehler’s Buy Low in Jasper. They will offer their foods starting Friday afternoon at 4pm and on Saturday 10am-2pm. They also will offer Bueher’s Buy Low Coupon Books for $5 with a total savings offering of $50 included.

Remember to patronize these events as the students raise money towards their next trip to Germany in May of 2009.  Your support is appreciated!!!

News from Norb Krapf
On Friday, May 9, 7:00 p.m., at the Dubois County Museum, Norb Krapf will give a reading from his new prose memoir, The Ripest Moments: A Southern Indiana Childhood.  The book is full of details about local customs, events, and activities and includes many names and 74 black and white photos that give a strong sense of people and their life in Jasper and Dubois County during the time after WW II through 1957.  For more information about this book, visit http://krapfpoetry.com/memoir.html.

German Heritage Day Program and German Heritage Award

The 10th annual German American Day Program will be held on Monday, October 6th, at the Schnitzelbank Restaurant.  Social hour begins at 6:00 pm with the Program beginning at 6:30 pm.  The tenth annual German Heritage Award will be presented. 

Past recipients of the German Heritage Award are Mary Jo Meuser, Claude and Martina Eckert, Dave Buehler, Linus and Sally Lechner, Joe and Irene C. Eckerle, Danny and Linda Wehr, Leo and Lora Lou Eckerle, the late Lowell and Joan Glendening, and Dave and Janet Kluemper.

The Nomination Form for the 2009 German Heritage Award is printed on the back of this newsletter.  Please nominate someone whom you believe has given what they can in order to make a difference.

Our guest speaker this year is Ron Flick, Registered Architect.

Raclette 2 (with a modern Raclette machine)

Per person:
150 grams raclette cheese
2 to 3 potatoes

side dishes
2 slices smoked ham
2 slices bacon
2 slices rolled ham
black olives
pickles
tomatoes
pearl onions
pickled vegetables
pears
mushrooms
1 lemon

Boil the potatoes in the skins and keep warm.

Remove crust and thinly slice the cheese. Wash and slice tomatoes. Peel and slice onions. Arrange the meats on a plate. Place other side dishes in small bowls.

Each guest has a small pan to melt the cheese with side dishes.

Have a pepper mill and paprika handy.

Each guest may add onion rings, tomato slices, pear quarters, pickle halves, very thin bacon slices, smoked or ham to his cheese.

Erinnerst Du Dich?

The following is from the pamphlet, The Pfaffenweiler Emigration by Gerhard Auer.  This pamphlet was written in September, 1984 and the English version translated by Seiffert.

The Emigration

If someone had decided to emigrate, he had to take the following steps:
--The candidate put a, normally, verbal request to the local administration, where it was transferred into writing and forwarded to the Grandducal Regional Administration at Staufen.  Here it was decided upon whether or not subordinate was to be released from his home country and under which conditions.
--(Document 11) Requests were granted if simultaneously debts were liquidated (if applicable).  In the beginning a community-servant publicly announced the request of emigration; later on it had to be published in the newspaper by decree.  This was meant to give creditors an opportunity to place their claims.
--At the same time all possessions were sold to finance voyage and settlement in the ‘New World’.  Not all the estate-sales were carried out completely though; There is still some acreage registered up to this day under the names of the emigrants.  Some of them only dissolved their properties in Pfaffenweiler after they had been able to found a secure existence in North American.  “Among the ones who financed their journey themselves were some who even took along their fortunes:  Andreas Gutgsell had 4000 Gulden, Anton Litschgi 5000, the couple Peter Scherle 20.000 Gulden.”)Priesner, Pg.64)
--(Document 12)  For poor emigrants usually the community would take over the cost for the voyage;  If the community paid, they had one less to feed; otherwise they might have had to care for him till his very end.
--A single mother received one payment rather than continuous financial support which she could use as a contribution to her traveling expenses. 
--(Document 13,14) When all these steps were completed, an agent booked the passages.

The Voyage

“The usual route went via Strassburg, via Le Havre to New York where some Pfaffenweilerians settled.  The majority continued toward the center of the continent.  Maria Anna Daeschle moved in with her two sisters in Philadelphia, Dionys Kiefer to his children and Wilhelm Wagner moved to his mother in Ohio:  Ludwig Winterhalter stayed with his cousin in Indiana, Barbara Hanser and her one year old stayed with her brother in Weinsburg, Ohio, August Pfefferle, Andreas Gutgsell and many others moved to Jasper, Indiana.  Johann Litschgi moved to a cousin in Mylsett, IL Adelheid Hauri and Kornel Schwab stayed with relatives in Louisville, KY.  Other settlers went to Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.”  Prienser, Pg. 64/65)

"Honoring those who promote our German Heritage"

The annual German Heritage Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed generously his/her or their time, talents or resources to maintaining, improving or building upon our German roots in Dubois County. Sister Cities of Jasper and the Jasper Partnership Commission created the award in 1999. The Jasper Deutscher Verein is sponsoring the award.

This recognition is open to all individuals, not just residents of the City of Jasper, who give what they can in order to make a difference.
Because the efforts of these individuals are sometimes known only to a few, a nomination will recognize the work of those who generously support our German Heritage.

A committee, consisting of the Presidents of the Jasper Deutscher Verein, Sister Cities of Jasper, and the Jasper Partnership Commission, will judge all nominations.  The Presidents will present the German Heritage Award during the German American Day Dinner celebration on October 6th at the Schnitzelbank.

How you can nominate:

The nominee must be an individual or group, nominated by any individual or group. Please submit the official form (copy is accepted), along with the following:

1. A letter of up to one page listing your reasons for the nomination.
2. A biography, up to two pages, listing the service or efforts of the nominee.
