Deutscher Verein Food and Pastry Booths Sign Ups

It is that time of year again!   We are already gearing up for our annual Strassenfest.   Remember that this is our only fundraiser during the year, so we need the support of our large membership.

To sign up for a work shift, please contact Ed or Sarah Zoglman at 482-2886.   Sign up for working in the booths and also shift chairpersons   will take place at the   May German Club meeting .   Please sign up for the shift of your preference.

Notes from Julie Newton, JHS German Teacher

On May 29 th , 12 JHS students and 2 chaperones will leave   for Germany .  We will first travel to the area near Freiburg (including Pfaffenweiler) to visit the Staufen Gymnasium.  While in this region, the group will of course visit Pfaffenweiler, meet Mayor Gutgsell, and view the museum.  We will also take an excursion to Heidelberg and Bodensee ( Lake Constance ).

On June 15th, the group will travel by bus to Munich , stopping along the way to view the castle of Neuschwanstein .  We will stay in Munich two nights and visit many sights there.

From Munich , we will travel to Pößneck.  While staying in this region, the group will visit the town of Mödlareuth , which was divided during the years of the division of East and West Germany .  We will also make excursions to Weimar and Dresden .

Finally, the group will spend two nights in Berlin before departing for home.  In Berlin , we will visit such sights as the Reichstag, the Checkpoint Charlie museum, and the castle at Sanssouci.  We will depart for the US on July 1.

DANKE

On behalf of the JHS German classes, I would like to thank the Deutscher Verein for providing the funding for the publication Wochenpost.  It's great having this available to students and to me as a teacher.  I use the copies regularly in class.  For example, I ask students to find an article that interests them based on the headline.  Then, I ask them to read it and explain it to a partner.  I will also have students pick out words they don't know and discuss them in class.  The students comment regularly on how much political content they see and how often our politics is reported on.  Thank you for providing this authentic material for our classes.

German Club Strassenfest Float

Anyone interested in "sprucing up" the Strassenfest float is invited to help on Sunday, July 10 th , beginning at noon .   We will meet at the corner of 9 th and Vine Streets.

Please call Patti Goepfrich at 482-4821 if you have any questions.

Erinnerst Du Dich?

Photo history of Jasper to be shown during fest
By Martha Rasche
Herald Staff Writer

Ninety people from Jasper are looking forward to a firsthand view of Pfaffenweiler, Jasper's sister city, next month.   They think residents of Pfaffenweiler might want to know what Jasper looks like, too.

That's why they have decided to take with them to the West Germany community about 60 pictures that tell the history of Jasper, according to Dave Buehler, who is coordinating the project.

Various businesses and industries donated money to help pay for the pictorial display and other gifts that "will be presented to the people of Pfaffenweiler from the people of Jasper," Buehler said.

Each of the pictures, some as large as 16 inches by 20 inches, is accompanied by a description and short history written on both German and English.   They include scenes of Jasper in the late 1800s, the floods of 1913 and 1964, the Jasper mill, St. Joseph 's Church, and the 1894 Jasper Reds baseball team.

More current pictures are of neighborhoods, factories and the Jasper Wildcats playing in the Hoosier Dome during the 1987 state football finals.   Many of the pictures are of Strassenfest activities.

Also part of the exhibits is a list of the original 12 families that belonged to St. Joseph 's Church in 1836 and another list, taken from the Pew Rent Book, of the families that were members of St. Joseph 's from 1858 to 1880.

The display will be in the window of Boeckman's Furniture, 512 Main Street , during the Strassenfest, August 4 through 7.

"We wanted everybody in Jasper to have a chance to see this before we take it to Germany .   That's the gist of the whole thing," Buehler said.

The photos will be displayed in Pfaffenweiler during the city's annual Schneckenfest, and then they will be put in the community's museum.
